Why gel wrist rests suck
A daring title, I know. But bare with me, as I try my best to explain my beef with gel wrist pads.
It all started when I was a kid (as most traumatic stories do) and our family computer. It was big, bulky, and made a bunch of weird noises. Speaking of big and bulky it also came with this unpleasant-to-look-at purple gel wrist rest.
Back then, I was big on World of Warcraft (this will make sense in a second, I promise) and one of my goals was to complete this one huge 25-man raid, however, my wrist rest had other plans. At a peek moment, it decides to completely swallow my wrist, surprising me, and making me yank my headphones and mouse right out of my computer, ultimately losing the battle for my team.
To this day I blame that big purple gel wrist rest.
So instead of working through my feelings toward inanimate objects, I decided to create a list of all the reasons why gel wrist rests suck, and why you’re better off getting yourself a Carpio 2.0 or G2.0.
Reason 1: Sir Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got
Not the biggest turn-off for me, but you have to admit gel wrist rests are very bulky. Their size makes them instantly overcrowd the desk space, making it seem like you have even less room than you already do. They are also terrible when you’re on the go. It’s not like you can just fit them in your laptop bag, and using it only at one place at a time kind of defeats the purpose.
Reason 2: Too much cushion.
As you may have noticed, I’m not the biggest fan of wrist rests that are too soft. In my opinion, they tend to swallow you up, basically doing nothing to keep your wrist in an actual ergonomic position. When creating Carpio 2.0 we wanted our wrist rest to be the perfect blend of stability and comfort, so we opted for contoured pads made out of high-grade silicone, and we never looked back.
Reason 3: Wanna spread your wings and glide? Well, you can’t.
Gel wrist rests are there, stuck to your desk and not moving anywhere, and for some people that might actually be a huge bonus, but for me personally, when I’m trying to type 70 wpm, and I’m gliding my mouse around the table the last thing I want is to be constricted to one small square of space.
Reason 4: Just uninspiring.
If you simply google the words gel wrist rest you’ll find thousands upon thousands of results that somehow all look the same. Different brands, and different manufacturers, yet one wrist rest that’s entirely the same. When I’m looking for gadgets for my personal setup, I tend to gravitate toward items that will make me feel special and unique.
Reason 5: It’s not a bird, but still goes “cheap, cheap cheap”.
Considering we live in a world of fast-paced production, when it comes to gel wrist rests words like “quality materials” and “controlled production” often get lost in translation.
At the end of the day, you make the choices you want to make and my listing of the reasons why gel wrist rests suck isn’t going to change your mind. But just stop for a quick second and give it another thought. The main reason I don’t like gel wrist rests is that they are not truly ergonomic. They were not developed with actual medical experts and designed so they actually help relieve wrist pain.
That’s my main problem with them. Oh, and they are seriously unpleasant to look at, that too.
